Retrofit Existing Buildings - Save Energy

Manufacturing Plant - Boiler Retrofit

FACILITY: Clothing Manufacturing Plant - Chicago, IL

PROBLEMS:

  • Old gas-fired boiler system was expensive to maintain and operate.
  • Higher gas bills and increased operating costs reduced company profits.
  • Uneven heating throughout the 126,000 sq. ft. building.
  • Very cold dock door areas caused worker complaints.
  • Poor winter/summer ventilation.

SOLUTIONS:

  • Local heating contractor recommended and installed Thru-Wall, Cambridge Blow-Thru® Space Heaters around the perimeter of the brick building.
  • Cambridge included this facility in their unique Building Study Program where customer gas bills are collected and loggers are installed to monitor temperatures throughout the building.

RESULTS:

  • Fuel usage declined 62%.
  • Cambridge heaters required much less maintenance.
  • Warm, balanced temperatures were achieved throughout the building, even at the dock doors.
  • Improved ventilation and indoor air quality.
  • Lower gas bills and lower maintenance costs resulted in a 2-year payback. After that, the savings went straight to the bottom line to increase company profits.

Retrofit Existing Buildings - Save Energy

Distribution Center - Air Turnover Retrofit

FACILITY: Distribution Center - Columbus, OH

PROBLEMS:

  • The existing large air turnover heating system created employee complaints in their 4-year old, 40 ft. tall, 340,000 sq. ft. building.
  • Extremely cold dock conditions.
  • Hot, uncomfortable upper mezzanine level during the winter.
  • The 4 large indirect-fired heating units occupied valuable floor space.
  • Very noisy system.
  • High operating costs because this large heating system was "running continuously."

SOLUTIONS:

  • Retrofit their building with a more effective and efficient Cambridge Heating System that consisted of 5 suspended Blow-Thru® space heaters above the dock areas, which despite their small size are capable of heating the entire building.

What They Had:
  • Air Turnover heating system
  • 17,500 MBH input
  • 100 HP usage (continuous)

What They Have NOW:
  • Cambridge Blow-Thru® Heating System
  • 10,325 MBH layout
  • 37.5 HP usage (intermittent)
  • 55,000 CFM

RESULTS:

  • Very satisfied employees.
  • Comfortable dock conditions and mezzanine temperatures.
  • Additional valuable warehouse floor space is now available.
  • Much quieter system and improved work environment.
  • Cambridge heaters required less maintenance.
  • Lower operating costs and improved productivity enabled the owner to pay for the replacement system within 1 1/2 years. After that, savings went straight to the bottom line to increase company profits.
